Welcome
to the Stitchery Stop! I hope you will stop here from time to time to
relax and enjoy looking at some fine designs. Primitive handicrafts are
wonderfully therapeutic and calming. I hope you find something here to
take your mind of your day and to try something new. Primitives work up
quickly and there is no need to be perfect. Remember, this is folk art
and your own personality should shine through.
Primitive
stitchery, appliqué and quilting are links with our heritage, our past.
They remind us of the simpler times, of being home with our families and
creating folk art to adorn our living areas. There is a comforting satisfaction
with stitching a sampler and having it displayed on the wall for all to see. Or,
how about making rugs out of wool scraps? These were the handicrafts for
everyone!
To
the right in an example of Redwork. This form or stitchery was popular
because of the colorfastness of the turkey dye red. The red color did not
fade with repeated washings and being dried out in the sun. There is
Bluework and Blackwork as well. Redwork is usually done with the simplest
of stitches: stem stitch, double running stitch and others. Why not give
it a try?
