| While
perusing the magazines at Barnes & Noble a few weeks back, I spotted
the beautiful cover of "Quilting Arts" magazine
(February/March 2007, Issue #25). It featured a wonderful decorative
quilt that was painted with hand carved flower stamps. The article was
titled "Layered Print Making" by Lucie Summers. Lucie carves
her own stamps, inks the designs onto fabric and then includes them in
her art quilts. After buying that issue (lightning fast) I went home and
read all about her interesting techniques. Now I wanted to learn how to
carve my own stamps. I purchased two books from Amazon.com - found them
very educational and fascinating. I purchased my supplies and got going!
This is a wonderful book for the beginner! I found it extremely helpful and straightforward. Inside Luann covers materials, tools, techniques, troubleshooting, and 20 terrific projects. You'll find excellent up-close photos and detailed instructions. Projects include... Feather I read it cover to cover and felt very comfortable in starting my very first carved stamp. Very first I carved my name (backwards LOL), carved my name again (this time correctly), and made up my own Love stamp. Next, I just adored the book's Chick and Egg project so much that I carved those and my own "chick" word stamp as well. I made an Easter card from my stamps. You can make this project too - click here to go to the free project idea.
There are other terms for rubber stamp carving - such as lino block carving, and soft block carving. There are also groups of people who participate in a stamp activity called Letterboxing! I love this book and I know you will too. Have fun with your new stamping art! Please stop by Luann's web site for more eye candy. I just love her jewelry and mixed media art. www.luannudell.com/index.html
