You can make really fun cords for necklaces, bag handles, belts. Make cording to match your art quilts, artist trading cards, and art dolls. This is MUCH easier to do than Kumihimo.
See the cords I made at the right. I just made this long strands while I was watching TV at night. Even my kids helped out it's that easy. And, I recommend this for anyone with arthritis and who wants to make creative accent cording. |
| I had a terrific time at the International
Quilt Market that was here in Salt Lake in May. I grabbed my
checkbook and headed out to find new and exciting items to put in the
shop. Let's just say right now - I didn't have enough money. While I
walking around the show I wished I had a fabric store and endless money.
Also, I have never seen so much new fabric in my life! I seems like my
local fabric stores only carry a teeny-tiny portion of available
fabrics. I saw a lot of trends in fabrics such as batiks, lots of
vintage, the new retro patterns, hand dyes. In fact, the fabrics were
overwhelming! I bet my favorite fabric store only carries 1% of all
available fabric!
The cord maker kit was super exciting. Now I can weave / braid my own cords. I can use any threads, yarns, fibers, strands, and fabric strips I want. Now my cords will always coordinate with the projects I use them on. This kit could make the coolest and hippest belts, purse or bag handles, embellishments on quilts, arts dolls, hair. Make a bunch of cords and crochet or knit them together for chic scarves, hats, and totes. I had to buy the cat cell phone holder patterns. They are so cute in person. Any cat lover would want one of these hanging on their purse, belt loop, or backpack. Kitchen items seemed to be very HOT such as placemats, hot pads, oven mitts, tea cozies, and aprons, APRONS, and MORE APRONS. Especially the ones that look like they are from the 50's (updated of course). Another set of patterns I got for the shop are hanging organizers. If your house is like mine, I need all the organizers I can get! Sewn with the trendy retro fabrics, these will great in a cozy girly cottage or hip 'n happening dorm room. The pin cushion pattern is a combination of sewing and painting (you know we paint a lot around here) and I thought that those of you with vintage hat pins, could change the fabric to one the new vintage designs and display your gorgeous collection. Yea, they would be great in the sewing room too! Hey, why not display your vintage hats on these too? There were so many gorgeous quilts in every booth - I loved being around all those talented sewers. I wonder if they all have those long arm quilting machines. I wish I could have that $17,000 machine - oh yeah and I wish I was a billionaire and had my own fabric store too LOL! Embellishments were everywhere - glitter to glue on fabric, buttons, heat set rhinestones, iron-on threads, fancy ribbons, angelina fibers, and charms. Fibers, fibers, fibers! For the stitcher there were a lot of redwork and primitive designs. New punchneedle designs - very fancy and detailed. I also saw more needle felting projects and supplies. The Gentle Art has some new hand dyed wool threads out - they were very pretty. I spotted two celebrities - Nancy Zieman from the show Sewing with Nancy, and Eleanor Burns from the show Quilt in a Day. Both of these ladies look just as nice in person as they do on TV. I have learned a lot of the years from watching their shows. It's so great that they are still add to their series. A fun new tool I saw was a yo-yo maker. This little tool was really nifty for helping us yo-yo challenged sewers make perfectly round yo-yos. They come from the Clover company. I also purchased for myself a fabric circle cutting template. I'm still a newbie at quilting, so hopefully it will come in handy one day! Overall it was a great show. Everyone was friendly and happy. It was great to see so many young designers! I loved the fact that there were so many designers on display and that the "mom and pop" shops are doing well. The show seemed very well organized, spacious and they even had delicious food. I hope they come back to Salt Lake again some day! |
