Instructions
Prep:
Depending on what kind of can you are painting, you will need to
prep the surface differently. This project is painted on a cardboard can (baby formula was
in it).
If you are painting on a metal can, click here for metal prep
instructions.
For the cardboard can, I used Gesso as my surface prep. Do
several coats for a good coverage.
Painting:
Sky
Base sky with Lavender Lace.
Hill and grass
Base hills and grass with Alpine.
Clouds
The clouds are done with white and your finger tip. (If you
haven't done finger clouds, please practice on a piece of scrap paper.) Stick the tip of
your index finger in white, press your finger and paint onto the project and swirl the
clouds on. You will probably need to reload your finger a couple of times in order to get
good coverage. I usually swirl the center of the clouds first and then brush off to the
sides of the cloud as I am running out of paint. With some practice, you can get some
really interesting clouds with this technique.
Hills and grass highlight
Highlight the top of the hills and grass with a sideload/float of
Cactus.
Shade - Shade the valleys of hills and grass with a
sideload/float of Woodland Night.
Pine trees
With a #1 liner brush, stroke in pine trees with Woodland Night.
For the pine trees closer in the foreground, add highlight strokes of Alpine.
Tree trunks and branches
With a #1 liner brush, double load in Burnt Umber and Autumn
Brown, pull in the trunks and branches of the trees. Let the colors blend together to give
the appearance of bark.
Tree leaves
With a scruffy brush, stipple with Woodland Night the leaves.
With your dirty brush, load in to Alpine and stipple over the Woodland night areas making
sure to let some Woodland night show through. Lastly, with you dirty brush, load into
Cactus and stipple on the tops of the trees making sure to let the other greens show
through.
Shade under trees
With a sideload/float of Woodland Night, use choppy strokes of
give a hint of shadows under the trees.
Watermelon
Base watermelon with Woodland Night, add stripes on with a
zig-zag lines of Alpine and then Cactus. Shade under watermelon with a sideload/float of
Woodland Night.
Squirrel
Base squirrel with Autumn Brown. Line highlights with Autumn
Brown+White, line shading and dot eye with Burnt Umber.
Basket of flowers
Base basket with Burnt Umber. Add a few lines to represent
weaving with a liner and Autumn Brown and then Autumn Brown+White. Flowers are dabbed on
with the brush end of a liner and Gypsy Rose, then with White.
Ball
Base ball in with Lavender Lace. The stripes are based in with
Napthol Red Lt. Shade ball with sideload/float of Midnight. Add a highlight line at top
with White. Shade under ball with a sideload/float of Woodland Night.
Wildflowers
The wildflower patches here and there are dabbed on with
Mendocino, then Napthol Red Lt, Gypsy Rose and finally a few dabs of White.
Birds in sky
There are a few tiny birds in the sky, they are lined in with
Burnt Umber.
Finish:
When dry, varnish with Delta's Satin Varnish.
