Cheer up those winter days with this fun carved pen.  This snowman is painted in toned colors, perfect for your country home.  This was designed as a quick, beginner painting project.  Paint up a bunch - great for gift giving! Melinda

St. Nicholas Hand Carved Pen available from:

The Woodloft
136 Hathaway St.
Girard, Pa  16417
(814) 774-3566

There is no line drawing for this piece.  The snowman is very simple and straightforward and I feel very confident that you will be able to paint this without a tracing.

Supplies Needed

Delta Acrylic Paint:  Trail Tan, Ivory, Dark Golden Rod, Black

Brushes - #4, #10 flat brush,  small stipple or scruffy brush, #10/0 liner.

Surface:  Top Hat Snowman carved pen from The Woodloft, 136 Hathaway St, Girard, PA 16417; (814) 774-3566; e-mail The Woodloft

Satin Varnish, Wood Sealer

Instructions.

Prep for Wood:  Sand wood (probably not needed), seal with wood sealer, let dry, lightly sand again.

PAINTING:
Entire pen except hat:
Trail Tan - base in snowman and pen handle.
Trail Tan + Ivory mix 1:1 - stipple over all of snowman and drybrush the pen handle.
Ivory - stipple final highlight over snowman and drybrush on the pen handle.
Dark Golden Rod - base nose.
Black - dot eyes, mouth and buttons. Eyes are dotted one each on opposite sides of the nose.  The mouth is a series of dots.  Start the first dot (largest dot) directly under the nose, then add the next dots (always a little bit smaller than the last dot).  The three buttons begin on the chest, lined up.  I started with the first top button, lined up underneath the nose.
Ivory - line a highlight dash on the left side of each eye and button..

Hat:
Black
- base hat.
Trail Tan - lightly drybrush all over hat.  This shows off the carving marks very nicely.
Dark Golden Rod - line in the hat band.
Black - paint in the checks on the hat band.

FINISHING:
Let dry.  Varnish.  Let dry again.  Enjoy!
